Black and Red Staircase

The kaidan dansu or step chest is one of the most distinctive tansu designs, being both cabinetry and architecture. This two section example has keyaki or elm drawers and cypress framing with wiped lacquer. The sliding doors exhibit black lacquer surrounding the cedar panels and make for a striking visual presence. The forged iron handles are in a simplified melon or mokko style.
