Ceramic ware from Shigaraki has been produced since the beginning of the 16th century. This ware is thick and sturdy with a transparent dark blue glaze shading into brown and yellowish-red. It was highly appreciated for its rustic appearance by such famous tea masters as Take no Joo (1502-1555) and Sen no Rikyu (1521-1591). Shigaraki water jars are particularly valued for use in the tea ceremony.
