Oribe

Furuta Oribe (1543-1615) was a general and the second tea master of the famous Rikyu school founded in the sixteenth century. He commissioned the traditional brown and green pottery from the Mino kilns of Gifu Prefecture, now known as Oribe in his honor. It is said the colors reflect the textiles used during this era. A spontaneous style of brushwork in the best folk traditon is characteristic of Oribe ware.
