The kaidan dansu or step chest is one of the most distinctive tansu designs, being both cabinetry and architecture. This two section example has keyaki or elm drawers and cypress framing with wiped lacquer. The sliding doors exhibit black lacquer surrounding the cedar panels and make for a striking visual presence. The forged iron handles are in a simplified melon or mokko style. A very fine example of a ship's strong box or safe. These stout chests were status objects of sea faring businessmen. and truly embody the talents of craftsmen working with wood and iron. This example in the cho bako or "merchant box" style is made of keyaki with thick iron hardware.The drop fit door at bottom secures multiple drawers which further secure additional kiri wood boxes.
