A large 2-piece stacking clothing chest design from the town of Nihonmatsu.Iron fittings with brass details(rabbit and moon)over elm (keyaki) drawer faces finished with wiped lacquer.The Japanese custom was to see a rabbit in the moon, a rabbit who made mochi, a popular food for marking the New Year. Meiji era. 41 5/8" wide x 45 1/8" tall x 17 5/8" deep

A very old bridal chest with locking bar from Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture.Black lacquer over kiri wood with a bo or locking bar securing the three upper drawers.Embossed iron hardware with symbols popular to wedding tansu. The bo exhibits a crossed hawk feather family crest or "takaha". 34 1/8 wide x 41 1/2 tall x 16 1/2 deep. Meiji era.

A popular single-section chest from the Tsuruoka township.Lower drawers exhibit embossed and incised iron lock plates with auspicious symbols as does the locking bar which secures the upper drawers.The locking bar has the stylized plum blossom crest or mon at it's center. Kiri wood finished in black lacquer with a case of kiri wood with wiped red lacquer.Meiji era. 34 1/2 wide x 17 1/2 deep x 41 3/4 tall

Keyaki drawers with rich patina have plenty of iron hardware with incised pine tree/bough motifs.
