Fine Suzuri Funa Dansu

Very fine merchant's sea chest in the "suzuri bako" style.This was the earliest ship chest design. The single front door is nearly covered with incised iron depicting a pine and bamboo motifs, symbols of endurance and longevity apt for sea faring businesses. Doors traditionally secured five interior drawers and often one secret compartment as it does in this example. Keyaki or Japanese elm with rich patina dominates the construction.
