Lovely lilac summer kimono decorated along the bottom with a design of swirling water, flowers and butterflies using the bokashi dye technique, which creates a subtle color gradation, and accented with silk embroidery; there are small paulownia crests on the upper bodice and sleeves; linen or ramie; Meiji era (1865-1912). 57" long x 48" wide.

Swallow Uchikake

Uchikake literally means "drape" and these garments were generally worn over kimono.They were showpieces worn by upper class samurai women. This piece is a late Edo-early Meiji garment with quilted hem. Its silk fabric has a wonderful pattern of recurring swallows and rice stalks on a subtle background of gray, tan and gold.
